WASHINGTON (AP) ? This is a little awkward.
President Barack Obama can't seem to stop bad-mouthing the record of former President George W. Bush. But on Thursday, Obama is going to welcome his predecessor and proudly preside as Bush's image and legacy are enshrined at the White House forever.
Obama and first lady Michelle Obama will join Bush and his wife, Laura, as their official portraits are unveiled. The incumbent is keeping up a presidential tradition typically defined by cheer and graciousness, but not without some uneasiness.
Hardly a day goes by without Obama or his aides talking about the mess they inherited ? meaning, from Bush.
It was just one week ago that Obama, revving up campaign donors, turned Bush into a punch line. Obama depicted Republican rival Mitt Romney as a peddler of bad economic ideas, helping the rich at the expense of the middle class, and then added to laughs: "That was tried, remember? The last guy did all this."
Now the last guy is coming back.
So, too, will his father, former President George H.W. Bush and the former first lady Barbara Bush. The Obamas will hold forth in the ornate East Room as George and Laura Bush are honored for their service before an invited audience of Bush friends and former staff members.
It will be a rare limelight moment for Bush, who has not been back in more than two years.
Obama and Bush have a cordial and respectful relationship, but they are not close. Both are political veterans who are able to separate political tactics from what they see as an overarching community among people who have served in the Oval Office, according to people close to them.
Only 44 men in history, and five men alive, have held the job.
"President Bush has been around politics a long time. He's been around how presidents deal with each other for a long time," said Tony Fratto, one of his former spokesmen at the White House. "He has an understanding for separating the necessities of political rhetoric from the job itself."
Bush showed that all through 2008, when Obama assailed his record on war and the economy en route to the White House. It was hard to remember at times that Obama was running not against Bush, who was finishing the last year of a tumultuous eight-year term, but rather Arizona Sen. John McCain.
When it was done, Bush welcomed Obama to the White House with grace and demanded that his team ensure a smooth transition.
History has marked this moment before, with grudges put aside.
When Bill Clinton came back for his portrait unveiling, Bush lauded him for "the forward-looking spirit that Americans like in a president." Never mind that Bush had run for the presidency to "restore honor and dignity" after Clinton's sex scandal.
And when Clinton welcomed back George H.W. Bush, whom he had defeated, he said to him and his wife: "Welcome home. We're glad to have you here."
"I would be surprised if there's very much tension" this time around, said Cal Jillson, a political science professor at Southern Methodist University who has long followed Bush's career.
Obama has enlisted Bush's help on earthquake relief for Haiti, and the two stood together in New York City last year in marking the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on America. They have also spoken at least three times at signature moments over the last three years, including the killing of Osama bin Laden.
Still, in the midst of a tight election year, the Obama-bashing-Bush's-record sets a backdrop.
"This president is looking for someone to blame," Romney said while campaigning in Colorado this week. "Of course, he started off by blaming George Bush, and that worked for a while but, you know, after three and a half years that wears kind of thin."
The White House points out that Obama praises Bush sometimes, too, as he did in March over Bush's willingness to take on immigration.
The visit is layered with political story lines.
Bush's brother Jeb is a potential vice presidential candidate to Romney. Bush's father has developed a kinship of sorts with Obama. And then there is Bush himself, who has endorsed Romney but is still viewed by many in his party as politically toxic.
More than any president in recent memory, Bush has not just intentionally faded from the public spotlight but all but disappeared from it.
"George W. Bush has been remarkably, and even strangely silent, even once you respect his sentiment that he did not want to get in Barack Obama's way," said Jillson. "I think part of that is just giving himself time to recover from what had to be an astoundingly difficult close to his presidency."
The politically impassioned issues of that time have faded. The Iraq war is over. The financial sector has stabilized after a devastating crash in late 2008. But the nation is still feeling the cost of the enormous recession, which is Obama's problem now.
Bush was last at the White House in January 2010. That was to join Obama and Bill Clinton in support of Haiti humanitarian relief.
Aides to both Obama and Bush are downplaying the Thursday reunion as a time of politics. Bush spokesman Freddy Ford said the former president and first lady are grateful to the Obama and looking forward to catching up with faces from their past, including staff at the Executive Mansion.
"I think there is a community here with very few members that transcends political and policy differences," White House spokesman Jay Carney said. He made that comment in the same briefing Wednesday in which he reminded everyone that Obama inherited a huge budget deficit (from Bush.)
Jenna Bush Hager, one of the George W. Bush's daughters, said she was invited for the ceremony and that the day will include a private lunch for the Bushes with the Obamas. She told "Fox & Friends" the day will be a chance to "celebrate his work, 'cause he worked pretty hard so I think he deserves at least a painting."
As to where it will go, she said: "Probably in the very back somewhere. I'm just kidding."
The painting will actually hang prominently in the formal entrance hall to the White House, the Grand Foyer.

A Beautiful Day | Souvenirs of Fatherhood
We settled into the silence and enjoyed our dinner together as a family, but so much had gone into that moment.
The food had just come ?fresh? out of the microwave, since it had sat on the kitchen table too long and cooled down. ?The few tiny drops of rain that fell before dinner had now stopped, mocking me for all of my panic, and leaving a somewhat damp, somewhat crisp feeling in the air. ?The spotty rain was visible only on my t-shirt, and so was the humid 90 degree heat that preceded the rain. ?I came in from outside and joined Erica in the kitchen. ?It was finally time to eat.
When Erica had pulled into the driveway only moments before, she was greeted by one screaming crying kid and another overly concerned big sister. ?I stuck my head out of the tent that was still set up in the backyard to explain, ?That one is fresh, I don?t know what he?s crying about now, but it?s not related to the phone call earlier.? She replied with a quizzical, ?What are you doing in the tent?? the rest of her sentence I?m sure was to be, ??when there is a kid crying in the house?? but to her credit, she didn?t ask the second part, and I may have just assumed it. ?Still, I felt I had to justify myself by explaining that it?was?raining just a few minutes ago and I didn?t want all of their sleeping stuff to be wet for tonight. ?I think I actually used the word ?thunderstorming? which was stretching the truth.
Before she came home, she called me to tell me that she would be very late. ?Even though she was told to pick up the cake at 6:00 the bakery was closed. ?She was waiting for a manager to come and open it up to give her the cake for the preschool graduation ceremony the next day. ?I begged her to hurry home.
I lifted up the bottom edge of my t-shirt to wipe the sweat dripping off my brow. ?I had felt a raindrop earlier and so I jumped up from the picnic blanket and rushed the kids and all the food back into the house, before running out again to grab their gear.
But before that one solitary fateful drop of rain, Pax, Ella and I were all laying on the picnic blanket taking turns applying an ice pack to our foreheads. ?It started as a way to be silly so that Pax would let me put the ice on his forehead, which worked a couple of times but mostly just helped to distract him from the shock of what just happened.
I had seen it all unfold in slow motion. ?He stood up to get out of the pool and the first foot he lifted to try to put over the pool?s edge caught the very tip of his toes at the top of the pool, sending his hands high in the air and toppling him face first onto the driveway. ?I rushed over and rinsed him off to see what the damage was. ?By his crying I thought we would have to make a trip to the emergency room. ?Once I could see the small scrape where the blood was coming from, amidst the black and blue mark on his forehead, I knew we could handle it at home. ?I sat him on the blanket and got him a towel from the house and immediately dialed his mommy.
Meanwhile, Ella yelled to me from the swimming pool asking to get out. ?Erica called my phone again but I had to let it go to voicemail. ?The ribs were still on the grill cooking, the corn cobs in the house were still boiling and then Ella called again to me with her final plea of, ?I have to go potty? which at first, caught me off guard. ?My initial reaction was that she was in a pool, and I gave it a low priority, but after more of her persistence, I left Pax with instructions to hold the ice pack to his head and took Ella in the house to help her get out of her swimsuit and make it in time.
Erica had just called a few minutes before with a status report telling me that she would be a few minutes late because it seems the store was having problems with their photo printing station.
I can still see me now, the trimmed meat searing on the grill, the smell of smoke and barbecue filling the air. ?I said hello to an old friend and simultaneously handled disputes from the pool with a wave of my hand. ?Erica left with the promise that she would be back soon. ?The sun was shining and the clouds were a brilliant white against a bright blue. ?It was a beautiful day. ?At this point, all I heard was some thunder in the distance. ?I was clueless as to everything that was about to transpire around me. ?I actually thought we would make it out unscathed and that Erica would arrive home just in time to sit down and enjoy a nice Memorial Day picnic with the family.
Now, as we sat inside around the kitchen table and looked out the window at the grey skies, the comfortable silence was a welcomed reminder of all the fun we had starting even the night before and how tired we all must be. And that it was still a beautiful day together.

Garlic constituent blocks biofilm formation, could benefit cystic fibrosis patients and others
ScienceDaily (May 27, 2012) ? E Pluribus Unum, the de facto motto of the United States, could just as well apply to biofilm-forming bacteria. Bacterial biofilms are far more resistant than individual bacteria to the armories of antibiotics we have devised to combat them. Now Tim Holm Jakobsen and Michael Givskov of the University of Copenhagen, and their many collaborators have pinpointed a constituent of garlic that attacks a key step in the development of biofilms, in an effort they hope may offer help in particular for patients with cystic fibrosis.
The research is published in the May 2012 issue of Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.
In earlier work, Givskov and his colleagues showed that "crude extracts of garlic inhibit the expression of a large number of genes that are controlled by bacterial quorum sensing [communication among bacterial cells involved in biofilm development], and that extracts promote a rapid clearing of pulmonary Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in mice," he says. "These findings encouraged us to identify and assess the efficacy of the pure active compound."
That compound turned out to be ajoene, the major constituent of a multitude of sulfur-containing compounds produced when garlic is crushed, says Jakobsen. The team then showed in P. aeruginosa that ajoene inhibits expression of 11 genes that are controlled by quorum sensing. "These key genes are regarded as crucial for the ability of P. aeruginosa to cause disease," he says.
"We also found ajoene to reduce the production of rhamnolipid, a compound that shields the biofilm bacteria from the white blood cells that otherwise would destroy bacteria, and that by combining ajoene with the antibiotic tobramycin, it was possible to kill over 90 percent of bacteria living in a biofilm," says Jakobsen.
"Our study is part of a series of comprehensive investigations of natural compounds targeting bacterial quorum sensing systems, and it further strengthens previous proof of concept research we conducted on the potential of compounds which block communication among pathogen cells in contrast to simply killing bacteria, as conventional antibiotics do," says Jakobsen. Such alternative approaches "may postpone or minimize development of antibiotic resistance," he adds.
Jakobsen says the garlic project grew out of a major donation from the German Cystic Fibrosis Association. "In CF patients, P. aeruginosa infection leads to bronchieciasis, pulmonary fibrosis, respiratory failure, and death," he says. "Despite intensive antibiotic traatment, CF patients have a life expectancy of about 40 years, and the main cause of death in CF patients remains complications associated with [this infection]." Jakobsen's team and the German CF Association have patented the action of ajoene against biofilms, and are seeking a pharmacutical partner to develop antimicrobial drugs based on ajoene.
Jakobsen notes that garlic has been used medicinally "for thousands of years." Garlic not only has antibacterial properties; it has anti-viral, anti-fungal, and anti-protozoal properties as well, and it has beneficial effects on the cardiovascular and immune systems, as well, he says.

Remembering the Sullivan Family
On Memorial Day, it seems only fitting to remember the family most famous for its personal loss during a war. This family happens to be from my hometown.
As a native of Waterloo, Iowa, I grew up hearing the name of the ?Five Sullivan Brothers? just because we had a convention center named in their honor. It wasn?t until years later I realized why. Perhaps you already know the story?these five brothers enlisted in the Navy after the attack on Pearl Harbor with just one condition. They wanted to be able to serve together.
They were granted their request, and served together until they all died together, as well, when the U.S.S. Juneau was torpedoed by the Japanese and sunk in November 1942. Suddenly the Sullivan family of Waterloo, Iowa, was given the unwelcome distinction of bearing the largest single loss for a military family in history, a distinction they retain to this day.
In 2008, Waterloo opened the Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veterans Museum in their honor, just one portion of which lets visitors walk through a replica of the Sullivan home and flip through a scrapbook of their family photos and newspaper articles. It?s an intimate family atmosphere with a crackling radio program in the background. So even though my co-author, Karen Whiting, was writing the World War 2 stories for our book, she let me write this one contribution from my own hometown: Carrying On. (Read the excerpt here and find it on August 3 in the book.)
If you?re interested in the full story of the Sullivans, check out the book We Band of Brothers: The Sullivans and World War 2, or the movie, The Fighting Sullivans, made in 1944.

JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) ? Joplin began a day of solemn remembrance Tuesday with a sunrise service to honor the hospital staff, emergency workers and other survivors who sprang into action when one of the deadliest tornados in U.S. history carved through the city exactly one year ago.
Gov. Jay Nixon told those at the Freeman Hospital service that Tuesday's tranquil dawn reflected the sense of renewal and hope in Joplin since the May 22, 2011, tornado that killed 161 people and injured hundreds of others.
"Scripture tells us that the path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day," Nixon said.
The hospital has seen a surge in use because the tornado destroyed St. John's Regional Medical Center, which has since occupied a succession of temporary facilities but is being rebuilt at a new location ? and renamed as Mercy Hospital Joplin.
The twister was the nation's deadliest in six decades, and it damaged thousands of buildings, including the city's only public high school. Groundbreaking ceremonies are scheduled at three sites for replacement buildings, including Joplin High School's future home.
A 4-mile unity walk through some of the city's hardest hit neighborhoods begins at 2 p.m. in neighboring Duquesne, where more than one-fourth of the community's 750 homes were destroyed and nine people died. The Joplin portion of the walk begins past a Wal-Mart where 200 people survived the storm by huddling together in employee break rooms, bathrooms and other designated safe zones. Three people, though, were killed inside that store.
The walk will conclude with a moment of silence at Cunningham Park at 5:41 p.m., the precise time when the EF-5 tornado packing 200 mph winds hit Joplin. The city park, which is across the street from the hulking remains of the St. John's hospital, has since been rebuilt.
Malichi Murdock, 17, was on stage at a community theater when the tornado hit. He was hit in the head by debris, and he doesn't remember anything from that night. His face was so badly damaged that his parents initially didn't recognize him when they saw him at Freeman six hours later.
"It was like a war zone" at the hospital, said Susan Murdock, Malachi's mother. "The smell of blood, people everywhere."
Three people inside the Stained Glass Theater died, including the play's director.
While many of Tuesday's events will reflect upon the past year, community leaders are also looking ahead toward what is bound to be a long recovery effort.
In January, elected officials and other members of a 45-person recovery committee endorsed a long-term recovery plan that calls for the creation of four new business districts that would allow residents to live and shop nearby and a unified approach to rebuilding that ensures new construction meets certain design standards.
In March, the city hired Wallace Bajjali Development Partners, of Sugar Land, Texas, as its "master developer" to oversee the rebuilding plan.
The day's events are also expected to attract some of the more than 130,000 volunteers who descended on southwest Missouri from across the country to help out. That group includes a contingent of bicyclists who left New York City's Central Park nearly three weeks ago on a Cycle for Joplin fundraising ride organized by a group of former Joplin residents known as the Joplin Expats.

CIENCIASMEDICASNEWS: Assessing individual breast cancer r ...
Source
1School of Medicine, University of Manchester.Abstract
The aim of this study is to determine breast cancer risk at mammographic screening episodes and integrate standard risk factors with mammographic density and genetic data to assess changing the screening interval based on risk and offer women at high risk preventive strategies. We report our experience of assessing breast cancer risk within the UK NHS Breast Screening Programme using results from the first 10,000 women entered into the Predicting Risk Of breast Cancer At Screening (PROCAS) study. Of the first 28,849 women attending for screening at fifteen sites in Manchester 10,000 (35%) consented to study entry and completed the questionnaire. The median 10-year Tyrer-Cuzick breast cancer risk was 2.65%(IQR range 2.10-3.45). 107 women(1.07%) had 10-year risks ?8% (high breast cancer risk) with a further 8.20% having moderately increased risk (5-8%). Mammographic density (percent dense area) was ?60% in 8.3% of women. We collected saliva samples from 478 women for genetic analysis and will extend this to 18% of participants. At time of consent to the study, 95.0% of women indicated they wished to know their risk. Women with a 10-year risk of ?8% or 5-8% and mammographic density of ?60% were invited to attend or be telephoned to receive risk counselling; 81.9% of those wishing to know their risk have received risk counselling and 85.7% of these were found to be eligible for a risk reducing intervention. These results confirm the feasibility of determining breast cancer risk and acting on the information in the context of population-based mammographic screening.- PMID:

'Avengers' sinks 'Battleship' at box office
By Lisa Richwine and Piya Sinha-Roy, Reuters
Superhero movie "The Avengers" topped U.S. and Canadian box office charts for a third straight weekend with $55.1 million, sending action movie "Battleship" into second place and toppling comedy "The Dictator," according to studio estimates on Sunday.
"Avengers," from Walt Disney Co's Marvel Studios, has amassed more than $457 million in domestic ticket sales since its debut earlier this month and another $723 million internationally for a worldwide total of $1.18 billion, according to Disney.
"Battleship," which had high hopes of becoming a summer blockbuster in the U.S. and Canada, could muster only $25.3 million this weekend in the face of the "Avengers" juggernaut.
Sacha Baron Cohen's satirical comedy "The Dictator," which has been heavily promoted in advance of its debut, finished in third place for the weekend with $17.4 million. Since its debut last Wednesday, it has taken in a total of $24.5 million in domestic - U.S. and Canadian - ticket sales.
"Battleship" was launched by Universal Pictures, a unit of Comcast Corp. Viacom Inc's Paramount Pictures distributed "The Dictator."

(AP Photo/Pablo Martinez Monsivais)
CHICAGO (AP) ? President Barack Obama and NATO allies declared Sunday that the end of the long and unpopular Afghanistan war is in sight even as they struggled to hold their fighting force together in the face of dwindling patience and shaky unity.
From his hometown and the city where his re-election operation hums, Obama spoke of a post-2014 world when "the Afghan war as we understand it is over." Until then, though, remaining U.S. and allied troops face the continued likelihood of fierce combat.
Gen. John Allen, the top commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, offered a stern warning Sunday that the plan to give Afghan forces the lead in fighting next summer won't take coalition troops out of harm's way. "It doesn't mean that we won't be fighting," Allen said. "It doesn't mean that there won't be combat."
The fate of the war is both the center of this summit and a topic no one is celebrating as a mission accomplished. The alliance already has one foot out the Afghanistan door, Obama has his ear attuned to the politics of an economy-driven presidential election year and other allies are pinching pennies in a European debt crisis.
As NATO powers and other nations contributing to the war effort gathered, the alliance's top officer, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, asserted that "there will be no rush for the exits" in Afghanistan. "Our goal, our strategy, our timetable remain unchanged," he said.
In fact, the strategy has shifted many times over the course of more than 10 years of war, and the goal narrowed to objectives focused on the long-term security of the mostly Western nations fighting there. The timetable has also moved, despite the overall commitment to keep foreign forces in Afghanistan into 2014.
Tension over newly elected French President Francois Hollande's pledge to end his country's combat mission two years early infused the meeting. German Chancellor Angela Merkel pointedly cited the credo of the allies in the Afghanistan war, "in together, out together," and her foreign minister cautioned against a "withdrawal competition" by coalition countries.
Hollande said he was merely being pragmatic in keeping a campaign pledge to pull combat troops this year but this still would "let the alliance continue to work."
While France's new posture obviously rattled the leaders, Allen betrayed no concern about the coalition's common purpose coming unglued. "The mantra of this particular mission has been in together, out together," he told reporters. "And I'm not seeing, frankly, many voices being raised that would oppose that."
Obama warned of hard days ahead. Still, he said NATO envisions a decade of transformation after 2014, with the United States still contributing money and some residual forces but out of the war itself. The alliance was sealing plans on Sunday and Monday to shift foreign forces off the front lines next year to put Afghan troops up front.
"What this NATO summit reflects is that the world is behind the strategy that we've laid out," Obama said after lengthy talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai. "Now it's our task to implement it effectively."
The shift to Afghan forces, despite their uneven performance under U.S. and other outside tutelage so far, is in large part a response to plummeting public support for the war in Europe and the United States, contributors of most of international troops now fighting the Taliban-led insurgency.
No other nations have announced plans to follow suit behind France and remove troops early. More such shifts appear likely, however, as each country eyes the clock and its own tight pocketbook. Although the 130,000-member fighting force ? dominated by 98,000 U.S. troops? could absorb combat withdrawals by other partners in the Afghan coalition, alliance leaders are struggling to maintain the status quo.
A deal is expected during the summit that would see France bring combat forces out of the sometimes restive province where they are based, but leave training forces or other support in place. That is the model followed by the Netherlands, Canada and probably Australia, which intends to bring most of its 1,550 combat personnel home next year.
In all cases, politicians were heeding political imperatives about a war that has gone on much longer than ever envisioned.
A majority of Americans now say the war is unwinnable or not worth continuing. Only 27 percent of Americans say they back the effort while 66 percent oppose the war, a new low, according to an AP-GfK poll released earlier this month.
Presidential politics shadowed the summit. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney accused Obama of overseeing looming defense cuts that he said would undermine NATO's mission, without noting that many Republicans voted for the deal.
"An alliance not undergirded by military strength and U.S. leadership may soon become an alliance in name only," Romney wrote in an op-ed in the Chicago Tribune. "At the same time that President Obama has been weakening our military, he has sent the message ? intentionally or not ? that the worth of NATO has diminished in America's eyes."
Thousands of demonstrators upset with the war in Afghanistan, climate change and the erosion of union rights marched through downtown Chicago as the leaders met.
Some are calling for the dissolution of the 63-year-old NATO military alliance. Others carried signs that read: "War(equals)Debt" and "NATO, Go Home."
Karzai said his nation is looking forward to the end of war, "so that Afghanistan is no longer a burden on the shoulder of our friends in the international community, on the shoulders of the United States and our other allies."
With all the talk of the war winding down, Allen's comments served as a sobering reminder that the transition to Afghan leadership in the fighting does not drop the curtain on combat for the coalition.
"I don't want to understate the challenge that we have ahead of us," he said. "The Taliban is still a resilient and capable opponent." Even with the Afghans in the lead, "we fully expect that combat is going to continue."
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday to discuss efforts to reopen major roads used to supply NATO fighting forces in Afghanistan. White House officials said no deal was in place to reopen the supply lines but they cited "positive" signs in the ongoing discussions. "We believe we're moving in the right trajectory," said Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes.
Pakistan closed the roads nearly six months ago in protest of an errant NATO air strike that killed Pakistani soldiers. The two nations are now haggling over the price the alliance will pay, with Pakistan demanding many times more per truck than they were paid a year ago, U.S. officials said.
Obama found himself at the center of a second international summit in as many days, shifting from the rustic presidential retreat in Maryland to the Chicago scene he calls home.
Opening the discussions Sunday, Obama declared: "Just as we've sacrificed together for our common security, we will stand together united in our determination to complete this mission."
