Worried that you or your friend might have had a glass too many on a night out and not be in a fit state to drive home? Well, now there is an app to assist you in ascertaining whether you could be over the limit.
BreathalEyes,?an app available on the iTunes App Store since the end of November, was developed by Clay Bradley and his friends with the specific purpose of helping people "to stay responsible and help protect others and your lifestyle."
The app uses the iPhone's front camera to track involuntary eye movements, known as "Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus,"?which it then analyses to estimate blood alcohol content.
A similar method is used by police to identify drivers who may be over the limit, although the police have stated that this app should not be used to make a decision about whether someone is fit to drive, and point to the warning that it is 'for entertainment purposes only'.
Nonetheless, BreathalEyes is said to have an effective range of 0.02% - 0.17% (+/- .02%) blood alcohol content. The app is available for $0.99 and it is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running on iOS 4.3 or later.
One of the developers, Russell Ries, declared that he found inspiration in his own life and, as a recovering alcoholic, he knows from experience how BreathalEyes could help others: "I know firsthand that any little bit of information you can put in front of somebody's face to help them make smarter decisions, especially people who have a tendency to abuse alcohol, can help."
