The U.S. Department of Transportation issued final regulations Dec. 2 that ban the use of hand-held cellphones by drivers of commercial motor vehicles, including trucks and buses on interstate routes. Hands-free devices and mobile phones with a speaker phone are still permissible. Potential penalties: up to $2,750 for drivers for each offense and loss of commercial license for multiple offenses.
Meanwhile, the National Transportation Safety Board last month suggested the same no-hand-held-phones rules be applied to all drivers nationwide.
